THORNTON YOUNG FARMERS ENTER SHOOTING CONTEST
The hospitality of the Whakatane Troop of the Legion of Frontiersmen in allowing the Thornton Club full use of their miniature range for shooting in the Y.F.C. National Miniature Rifle contest was warmly commented on by the chairman, Mr F. E. J. Broadmore, at the monthly meeting of the Thornton Young Farmers Club on Monday. The seven members attending had a most interesting and enjoyable evening through the helpfulness and generosity of the Legion. The subject of a glass trophy cabinet was once again on the agenda but as members were divided on the subject it was left for a final vote on the matter to be taken next month. Modesty and boastfulness tended to clash. The Club has obtained a number of young farmers’ publicity leaflets explaining the functions and . history of the Y.F.C. in New Zealand. It was decided that the permission of Mr R. E. Blair, Secretary-Man-ager of the Rangitaiki Plains Dairy Factory having been obtained, these pamphlets are to be distributed throughout the Thornton district in cream cans. A field day will be held on the properties of Mr W. T. Law and Mr F. E. J. Broadmore this month. A shearing demonstration will be given on Mr Law’s property, the Club afterwards crossing the road to Mr Broadmore’s farm where the results of trials with hormone weed killers will be investigated. It is hoped that Mr E. R. Marryatt, Fields Instructor, Whakatane, will be present to explain the way in which these new weed killers work. Mr Broadmore has a special spraying outfit for these hormone weed killers, which will be explained and possibly demonstrated during the visit.
