PLENTY OF TALENT FOE SATURDAY NIGHT

Boxing fans should enjoy a treat on Saturday night. The Whakatane Boxing Association has had lines out in all directions for the best amateur talent available, with the result that some of New Zealand’s top rankers will be in the ring here. There will be a strong contingent from Auckland, including Bob and George Broadhurst, whose imposing records are well known to fight enthusiasts. Both are Empire Games nominees.-Bob holds the Auckland and New Zealand bantamweight championships, and George the Auckland and New Zealand flyweight titles.

Another Aucklander who can be counted on for a good exhibition is C. J. Brennan, who recently fought in a 6-round preliminary to the Kapeen-Kelly professional fight in the Auckland Town Hall, and will be featured in another special preliminary to the Kapeen-Glarrie Gordon match on October 17. Brennan’s opponent in the star bout here on Saturday is to be C. Anderson, of Waihi, a very fine type of boxer with an excellent record, including a great tussle with the 1947 New Zealand welterweight champion, Stanley. Rugged Middleweights

: Apart from the bouts in which the Broadhursts are to figure (their opponents are not yet announced), most interest will probably be focussed on the special four-round middle-weight contest between the Bay of Plenty champion, B. Caverhil and rugged, hard-hitting, pugnacious F. Lingman from Auckland, just the type of fighter to bring out the best in the Matata boy. . It was not until yesterday noon that the Association got final confirmation of the visit of R. K, Papesch, Auckland junior paperweight champion from Cammick’s gym, who will meet J. Hanks, from Donovan’s Fire Brigade gym, run-ner-up for the Auckland title in a thrilling fight. More Champions

Other Aucklanders nominated: R. Speck, promising paperweight; L. N. Hanks, runner-up to George Broadhurst in Auckland senior flyweight championship; W. Woolsey, Auckland junior light heavyweight champion; N. Nelson, Auckland junior featherweight champion; and G. Jacobs, runner-up for the Auckland middleweight championship. From Mangakino there will be Russell, Curtis, Fleury, Neilson, Rithbridge, Scotson, Leach; from Wai-r toa the Andrenes brothers, Russell and Norris; from Rotorua, two Cunninghams and Vercoe. Local Lads In Too Whakatane will be represented by lan McKenzie (Bay of Plenty Paperweight champion, who is to meet Speck), C. O’Rourke, K. Dines, B. Butcher, R. Zinsli and R. Kelly. Other'local nominees are J. Stevenson (Ohope), I. Hunt (Taneatua), R. Kinley, M. Raureti and A. Keepa (all of Matat ; a).
