International Network Of Roads Planned For Europe
A plan for the building of an international network of first class motor roads across Europe has been worked out by experts at Geneva under the supervision of the Economic Commission for Europe. Included in the plan is a direct road from Edinburgh to Rome ,with an extension to Sicily, and one from Helsinki to Marseilles. The Channel Tunnel is not given backing, and ferry boats will remain as the only large-volume cross-Channel transport, but two Alpine tunnels are included in the scheme. One is the Mont Blanc, tunnel, but the other, as yet provisional, has not been given a definite site. All main Alpine passes are planned to have sufficient width for two vehicles to pass at any point. The whole plan is intended to take into account traffic conditions in northern, central aod southern Europe 15 years from now, as well as providing for real highways in the more immediate future.
