W AIR AKA LOSES PILE CUP IN CLOSE GAME

A slightly superior knowledge of the game, which enabled them to finish off their movements - ampng their faster backs gave Matakana Island, Tauranga,'.a one point win* over Wairaka and the John Pile Memorial Cup in a rugby match at Whakatane Field on Saturday. The game proved to be one of the best seen at Whakatane this year and kept a large crowd in bright sunshine wildly excited for the greater part of play and Matakana were given a great ovation when they walked off the field with the final score 16—15.

Better combination in a speedier set of backs and fine tight play by fast forwards were the main feature of Matakana’s win. Wairaka showed greater fitness but the backs seemed unable to combine, while

the forwards showed a marked disinclination to pack into the tight rucks. However, in the loose they showed the fine form of previous 1 games this year. Among the home forwards R. Hudson played one of the finest games 1 this season and capped it with a fine try. In the backs R. Crapp was very sourfd at full back while J. Crapp sent out some very fast passes from the base of the scrum. B. Carter played enterprising football at first five-eighths and fully deserved his try, the first of. the game. .

The Matakana team impressed with speedy backs and the penetration of their second five-eighths, Cooney, and the deceiving long run of the centre, W. Gardiner, who scored two tries. Among the forwards P. Murray worked hard all the time while G. Gardiner gave a very fine exhibition of lineout play, taking the 'ball high in the. air and feeding his backs. For Wairaka tries were scored by Carter, Hudson and T. Riin^,. the latter converting all three. For Matakana tries came from W. Gardner (2), P. Murray and G. Cooney. Two were converted by W. Gardiner. t ’ i
