Donation A donation of £2 2s has been, made by the Council to the New Zealand Crippled Children’s Society. Archery Trophy A trophy for competition between 1 the Bay of Plenty and Rotorua archery clubs has. been donated to the Opotiki Club. Rules and conditions have yet to be finalised. Improvement to Highway Immediate maintenance work is to be carried out on the CpotikiMatawai Road through the Waioeka Gorge and an effort is being made to improve the surface. It is believed that the Works Department plans to spend £IOO,OOO on the highway. Seats Available Despite heavy bookings for the Whakatane District High School’s presentation of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzanee’g tomorrow a number of unreserved seats will be on sale to the public when the doors open. The number will be limited and will probably be not more than 100.
School Dental Clinic A further addition to the ties of the Rangitahi School, MuruA,
para, is a new dental clinic, which was partly built, at Rotorua and then brought out in sections. The roll of the school has been increasing steadily and efforts are being made to speed up the building programme and increase the facilities.
New Airgram Service It is now possible for passengers on British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines planes flying between Australia, New Zealand and North America to send airgram cables to any part of the world. The new service is the first to be used in the Pacific and may be paid for in any standard currency.,
Land Tax Due __ The Commissioner of Taxes draws attention to a notification appearing in today’s issue that the due date for payment of land tax payable by companies for the current year is Friday, October 7, 1949. Demands will be posted on or about September 30. Land tax on land held by individuals will not be due until January 16, 1950.
Edgecumbe Bridge Lighting If, when the new traffic bridge at Edgecumbe, now under construction, is completed it is found necessary to provide lighting only two > lights will be erected, one at either’ end, it was stated at yesterday’s meeting of the Whakatane County Council. Because of the breakage of bulbs it was considered that any further lighting would not be warranted.
Tauranga Projects The Whakatane County Council does not want to be involved in any cost of any major projects that may be undertaken at Tauranga it was stated at yesterday’s meeting of \ the Council. The chairman, Mr J. Burnett, said that in any case the Council would not agree with all the developments that were being planned at Tauranga. However, it ' was decided to be represented at a meeting that is to consider a deep sea harbour at Tauranga, a fertiliser works near the port, a freezing works and a heavy modern high- . way to connect the pumice lands , with the nearest port, to be held at Rotorua on October 7.
