PLOUGHING RACE AT OTAKIRI WAS GREAT SUCCESS

Although they may have been common years ago ploughing races today are not often held and that is probably the reason why the race organised by the Otakiri Young Farmers’ Club attracted so much attention on Thursday from residents of the district. Held under ideal conditions before a very large crowd, estimated at over 250, the event proved an outstanding success and revealed that the art of good ploughing was still not lost. There were several different events included in with the race. The best all round ploughman was G. Murray, who was awarded the Barton Cup. He scored 75 points out of 100. B. Payne was second with 71. B. Payne was also successful in two other evenst, being first in the general ploughing and the best general ploughing. Other results:—

Ins and outs, P. Mayo and R. Barton Jun. 1 equal; straightest fering, G. Murray 1; best fering, G. Murray 1; straightest ploughing, B. Barton Jun. 1.

The judges were Messrs W. Gow. W. McCracken and J. Jamieson. Following the success of the race the Club now hopes to hold the event each year with entries from outside the district. This year entrants were restricted to Otakiri residents.
