Taneatua Women’s Institute Makes Two £4 Donations

Two donations each of £4 4s were given to the War Memorial Committee and the Plunket Society from the proceeds of the drama concert held at Taneatua recently, by the monthly meeting of the Taneatua Women's Institute last week. The balance sheets for the concert and the drama festival were presented to the well attended meeting by Mrs Lawn. The institute’s birthday party is to be held in November and the cake is to be made by Mrs A. Teb 1 - butt. Sister Institutes are to be invited.

Mrs Bennet gave the Golden Thread with the poet Henry Lawson as her subject. After a brief talk on his life Mrs Bennet read extracts from several of his poems. A wall competition arranged by Mrs Frost, was won by Mesdames McDonald and Gardner first equal, Mrs McDonald finally winning on the draw.

A newspaper item printed in a paper, which must have been the grandfather of the present “Beacon’,’ described a school picnic which was held in Mitchell’s paddock in 1903. Objects of interest shown included an alabastor model of the leaning tower of Pisa, a tiny smelling salts bottle, old photographs of Taneatua and other articles of equal interest. Mrs R. McGougan was accorded the keen interest of members when she demonstrated passe-partant work.

A very amusing sketch presented by Mesdames Goodhew, M. Sisam, and Gardner entitled “Bracelets” drew forth much laughter and applause. Competition results:—

Best flower, Mrs K. Tebbutt 1, Mrs A. Tebbutt 2, J. Laird 3; best vegetable, Mrs J. Shaw 1, Mrs J. Butler 2, Mrs McDonald 3; coconut ice,-Mrs Merrie 1, Mrs Lawn 2, Mrs Ewert 3.
