LIQUOR LICENSES
Sir,—The suggestion of your correspondent “Democrat” that a Y.M.C.A. should be established in Whakatane instead of an hotel is brilliant. The Y.M.C.A. accepts male boarders only. Hence a gentleman coming here with his wife could stay at the Y.M.C.A. and send his wife to a licensed hotel to spend the night. This would be abstinence with a vengeance. Yours etc., “HAPPY PIUSBAND”
Sir, —In a previous letter your correspondent “Democrat” asked the question, “What of the merits ,of an up to date boarding establishment such as is found in niost towns?” In reply to an invitation to name some of these establishments, “Democrat’s” choice of the Y.M.C.A. was particularly unfortunate.
It is not so long ago that the condition in one of the largest of the Y.M.C.A. hostels in New Zealand was the subject of public enquiry. The conditions revealed were found to be so bad that any respectable licensed house would have been ashamed of them. This, in spite of the fact that the Y.M.C.A; funds were, and still are, raised by public subscription. Queensland is a bit too far away to be dragged into the present discussion, but “Democrat” may be prepared now to reread his earlier letter and tell your readers just where up to date boarding establishments are 10 be found in New Zealand. Yours etc. “TEMPERATE TRAVELLER”
