More Burial Plots

Concrete paving has been layed to service another block of plots at the Whakatane Hill Cemetery. Pedestrian Crossings Four new posts painted black and white have been erected on the Strand pedestrian crossings. Council Contribution A contribution of £1 has been made bv the Whakatane Borough Council to the Auckland Sailors’ Home. James Street Widened Road formation in James Street has been widened to give a minimum width of 18 feet while base metal has been spread and rolled for a distance of 30 chains. New Substation A larger transformer complete with new switch cabinet, fuses and mains has been installed in McGarvey’s Road to cope with the large increase in loading in this area. Hillerest Installations

An additional one pole substation is to be installed during the next few weeks on the Western side of Hillerest. A new 3300 volt line is to be erected while a new transformer has been ordered and should be completed next year. Campaign Huts The Whakatane Branch of the New Zealand National Party has been granted permission to place a hut in the Strand as an office during the election campaign in November. The same privilege has also been extended the Whakatane Labour Party if required.
