PROPOSED WATER LOAN SANCTIONED BY RATEPAYERS
Obtaining a majority of 47 for the proposed water loan in the public poll held at Whakatane on Wednesday the Borough Council has thus received the sanction of the ratepayers to proceed with a loan of £25,000 to install the new water supply for the borough. Of the 820 ratepayers entitled to vote only 85 bothered to visit the polls. Sixty-six of the provisional votes were for the loan, 19 against and there were three declaration votes.
Whether it was because most people had forgotten the date of the poll, even though it was advertised, or because they were just not interested those in charge of the two booths at the borough chambers and the King Street Hall reported a very quiet day with very few inquiries. Voting was. obviously very slow. At the borough chambers 44 were for the loan and nine against, while at King Street 22 voted for it and ten against. A fair majority in each case. Now that the Borough Council has been authorised by the ratepayers to go ahead with the loan all that is required now is to advertise that intention in the press and New Zealand Gazette. In the meantime tenders are being called for the work which will be started as soon as possible.
