Tunnel For Wairere Stream Suggested

The Whakatane Borough Council is to investigate the possibility of driving a tunnel so that the overflow from the Wairere Stream in flood periods will be diverted to Otarawairere on the sea coast. The suggestion was introduced by Cr K. Needham, who said that very preliminary surveys revealed that the tunnel would only be about ten to 12 chains in length. Other councillors supported the scheme and decided to follow it up.
