COMMON COURTESY

Sir, —Your article “Common Courtesy” I read with mixed feelings. The children of today are attacked for their lack of manners. In my opinion it is the adults who set the bad - example, especially young healthy married women and she not so young approaching the 40’s. Up to this age most women are able to stand for a 20 minutes journey without ill effects, but it is mostly the very young school children who stand, not the elder ones. These children have a long enough day 8.30 p.m. till 4 a.m. every schoolday, while the adults usually only do the trip once a week. Perhaps if these children were showm courtesy they would copy, the examples set and as they grew old enough to take the school day in their stride, they would show courtesy too. Also is it very hard to understand that men get tired, too, both mentally and physically and would appreciate a seat home if they were not made to feel guilty because the “weaker six shopped” had to stand, which is tcugh after a matinee. Yours etc.,

ONE OF THE OLD SCHOOL”

We note the children referred to attend night school, and agree the session is a long one; but surely this is an exceptional case? In any event, we were not referring to those too young to be expected to know any better.—Editor.
