King Street Hall Dance A grand dance was held in the King Street Hall on Saturday night in aid of the Social Committee. The Monte Carlo was won by Miss Betty ward and Mr G. Butler. Music was supplied by Harrison’s orchestra. Mrs E. Fowell obliged with the supper extra.

Births And Deaths Decrease .Both births and 'deaths registered at Whakatane showed a slight decrease during August compared with the same period last year. The figures for births dropped from 28 to 20 while deaths slid down one to five. However, there was an increase in marriages from five to eight.

Packets of 20 Again? New Zealand cigarettes should soon be appearing in packages of 20. Tobacconists have received amended price orders in which provision is made for the sale of these. It is to be hoped that the allocation to tobacconists will be increased but, judging by the cigarette famine, which occurs every few weks, this is a remote possibility.

Rangitaiki Rainfall Rainfall on the Rangitaiki Plains for the month of August totalled 2.47 inches, almost half of which fell on August 7 when 1.20 inches were recorded. The total for the first eight months of this year was 39.12 inches, compared with an average over the past 10 years of 40.60 inches. Average for August over the past 10 years has been 6.72 inches.

Police Attacked

Three people were assaulted and a number rudely accosted by a man at Whakatane on Saturday morning before he was taken into custody by the police. Acting violently towards a number of people the man caused some damage to private property before he was imprisoned at Whakatane. While in the gaol he later attacked two members of the police before being subdued. He has been removed to a mental hospital. Fence Without Permit Pleading guilty to a charge of constructing two boundary fences of concrete blocks at Ohope without the previous consent of the Building Controller, John Patterson (Mr C. Otley) Whakatane, was fined £2, costs £2 12s, by Mr E. L. Walton S.M., in the Whakatane Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Appearing for the District Building Controller, Mr B. S. Barry said that the fence had been built from December 1, 1948, and defendant had said he was ignorant of the restrictions on cement when questioned by the building inspector. No attempt had been made to hide the work, Mr Otley told the court. Judgment Summons Orders

In the Magistrate’s Court at Whakatane yesterday the following judgment summons orders were made by Mr E. L. Walton, S.M.:—■ Steve Hotene to pay P. J. Green Ltd. £5 15s, costs 15s 6d, in default five days goal; P. W. Thompson to pay P. J. Green Ltd., £l2 12s lid, costs £1 4s, in default 12 days goal; G. Archer to pay Hall Supplies Ltd. £lO 14s lid, costs £1 Is, in default 10 days goal, warrant to be suspended if debtor pays instalments of £2 month; James Nuku to pay. J. W. Goodhew Ltd., £35 15s 6d, costs £1 11s 6d, in default 30° days goal; Dick Kelly to pay J. W. Goodhew Ltd., £8 Is lid, costs 15s 6d, in default eight days goal; Wi Whetu to pay L. Clarke £27 11s 6d, costs £3 11s 6“d, in default 27 days goal.
