NEW NURSES’ HOME NEARLY COMPLETED NOW
A record for the Bay of Plenty for speed of construction has probably been established in the time the new nurses’ home at the Wha-
. katane District Hospital has been •, .built. Commenced on March 1 the V building is now almost completed /<Sand all that is required now is the ..finishing touches by the carpenters ■and for the painters, electricians and plumbers to conclude their parts of the contract. The new building is an imposing structure of modern design and has been added onto the old nurses’ quarters. There are 33 single bedrooms divided between the two floors, 17 being on the top storey. Each bedroom has been well finished off and includes a built-in wardrobe and shelves. On both floors a passage down the centre of the building divides rooms on either side and this, as in the bedrooms, is finished off in polished wood and padded floors. New bathrooms with the latest fittings have been installed, along with shower rooms and other toilet facilities. Ample installations have been made and there is r. ot likely to be any queuing for a bath or shower.
Home Comforts—Plus Throughout the building care has been taken to make it as comfortable as possible and one thing that will help in this direction is the central heating. From the outside the new home has a pleasing appearance. It has a tiled roof that fits in comfortably with other hospital, buildings and within a few weeks it should be hard to see that it is not part of the original building. The whole structure is 93 feet long and 25 feet wide and the best materials available have gone into it. The contractor, Mr R. Crawford, of Ray Crawford Ltd., has managed to erect the building in a very short .time. There have been no hold-ups through lack of materials or labour, the whole job being done smoothly and without any hitches whatsoever. Part of the building is already occupied by some members of the staff because of lack of accommodation at the hospital, but it is expected that full occupation of the building will be made in about a month’s time.
