Whakatane -Barbarians

Steps are being taken to form a Whakatane Barbarians rugby team to play the R.S.A. Those who are eligible for the team are ex-Wha-katane representative players. It is hoped to have the team formed soon and any ex-players who may be interested are asked to contact D. O. Stewart or G. Oswald.

July and August were successful months for Otakiri Red Cross activi. ties. The collection of shoes for displaced persons was gratifying, 43 pairs being collected. Thirty-three new gai-ments were made and 70 used ones mended and sent forward to the Whakatane Centre. A sum of £2 2s was sent in for relief to Transjordan. Australian Footballer Moves On The Australian rugby footballer, B. Piper, who was injured in a fall from an hotel fire escape balcony at Whakatane on August 21 has been removed from the Whakatane District Hospital to the Waikato Hospital at Hamilton for further treatment. - While at Whakatane Piper, whose injuries were rather serious, had been progressing favourably.

Meteorite At Ohope What is thought to have, been a shooting star, or a meteorite, was seen at Ohope at about 3 a.m. on Saturday. One person who saw the meteorite said it appeared to be coming over the sea from the direction of White Island and gave off a very bright golden light. So bright was it that it was possible to read a paper. It did not appear to be travelling at any great speed but when over the beach it blew up with a loud roar not unlike a cannon. There was no trace of any foreign heavenly body on the beach at daylight.

Edgecumbe Card Evening There was a fair attendance to the fortnightly card evening of the Edgecumbe Parent-Teacher Association in the school on Monday night. Winners: —Women: Mrs Sutherland. Men: Mr P. Parsons. Booby prizes: B. Parsons and J. Dodunski. The aggregate prizes for the series were won by Mrs L. Andresen and Mr J. Vickery, a new series is to commence on September 12.
