Culture of Passionfruit A demonstration on the culture of passionfruit is to be held by the Bay of Plenty Sul> Tropical Fruits Association next month. This decision followed a suggestion to hold h a passionfruit field day at a meeting of the association in TauranPh.

Canned Tree Tomatoes The committee of the Bay of Plenty Sub-Tropical Fruits Association, at the sugestion of one of its members, is to investigate and report back- to a future meeting on the possibility of canning tree tomatoes in the Bay of Plenty.

Water Loan. Poll A poll of ratepayers to sanction the proposed water loan of £25,000 of the Whakatane Borough Council is to be held on September 14. Rate<payers will be asked whether they agree to the loan or whether they are against it and will be asked to vote accordingly. Awakeri Hockey Dance

Water Loan Rate of 2£d Probable

The proposed new water loan of the Whakatane Borough Council of £25,000 has to be paid back in half yearly instalments with an interest of per cent over a period of 30 years, the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, told a public meeting at Whakatane on Thursday night. This would mean an annual payment of £1441 18s Id and necessitate levying a rate of 2fd in the £ on the present valuation of the borough.

Water Still To Be Chlorinated It did not matter what new water supply was adopted for the borough the water would still have to be chlorinated, the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, told a public meeting at Whakatane last week when discussing the new water loan pro>posal. This was required by Health Department regulations. However with the new system planned for Whakatane it was expected that the water supply in the future would be very much more pure than it was at present.

Pew Unemployed With 19,390 vacant jobs throughout the country last month, unemployed persons totalled 207, according to . the monthly review of the Department of Labour and Employment. There were 9952 positions available for men and 9438 for women, while 196 men and 11 women sought work. During the month 1261 men and 245 women were placed in work. Of' the 9952 vacancies for men, more than 7000 were for positions in the Auckland, Lower Hutt, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin districts. The same districts accounted for more than 8000 of the 9438 positions available for women.

More Settlers Nominated

For the three months ended on' July 31, 217 Britons have been nominated by residents for settlement in New Zealand under the Government’s nomination scheme for single people between the ages of 21 and 35. This is the highest number of nominations so far received in any three-monthly period, .said a spokesman of the Department of Labour and Employment. Of the 217 applications, 170 had been approved. One hundred and twelve nominated settlers were ar-> riving on the Atlantis, which was due at Wellington about September 11. A condition of nomination was that accommodation should be guaranteed.
