N.Z. Invention Will Assist The Armless
The shocking realisation at a picnic that an armless man cannot even feed himself so struck a Napier engineer that he set to work to invent an appliance which would enable such a disabled man to eat with knife and fork, raise a cup to his lips, turn over pages, and use a typewriter. He was successful. Recently quiet, unassuming Mr A. W. Taff demonstrated the appliance before disabled men, orthopaedic surgeons, Rehabilitation officials, and representatives of various organisations. Following the demonstration, an official assurance was given that such appliances would be supplied, under social security where orthopaedic surgeons recommended it. Mr Taff’s device is a pair of wooden arms on stands, operated by foot and leg movements. Into the arm sockets can be fitted a variety of tools.
