Flood Grant

The Works Department has approved a grant of £333, £1 for £2, to assist in major flood damage amounting to £IOOO on the Te TekoGalatea and Taneatua-fßualoki roads. /

2,278 Dogs Registered yr. . So far this year 2,278 dogs with fees amounting to £6lB 2s have been registered with the county inspector, Mr A. R. Carling, he reported to this week’s meeting of the Whakatane County Council. This includes 217 dogs which were registered during the past month. In addition to these 61 driving licenses and one ice cream license were issued.

Night Checks On Bicycles Along with the traffic inspector, Mr M. C. Bridge, two night checks on bicycles were held last month at Whakatane, Te Teko and Edgecumbe, the county inspector, Mr A. F. Carling, reported to the Whakatane County Council yesterday. In the county three youths under 18 were given warnings to have lights fixed to their bicycles and one adult was given an offence notice.

Calf Club Judging In furtherance of a plan of tfrfi Rangitaiki Plains School Calf Clup to obtain more uniformity of judging at School Calf Clubs, the Thornton Young Farmers’ Club held a field day at the Thornton School. All schools in the area had zeen asked to send their local judge. Mr Neil Carter then addressed the pupils and visiting judges. It is hoped that the standard and number of entries in this year’s competition wil exceed that of last year.

New Broadcasting Station Another new broadcasting station is to be opened, this time at Whangarei. The official opening will be at 8 p.m. on Saturday but the station has been on the air before now test-; ing, and has been received very clearly at Whakatane and other parts of the Bay of Plenty. Operating on a frequency of 970 kilocycles or 309 metres the station has a call sign of IXN and will broadcast both commercial and national programmes.
