MATAT UA DOES WELL IN TABLE TENNIS CHAMPS.

Although the standard was high in the junior and B grade games the performances were not up to the expected standard in the A grade competition of the Bay of Plenty Table Tennis championships held at Tauranga on Saturday. Fine games were played by members of the Matatua team from Whakatane, which was successful in winning seven titles.

Results of Matatua games:— Singles: Men, F. R. Paton (Whakatane) beat L. Brewer (Tauranga) 21/7, 21/18, 21/9. Doubles: Men, Paton and J. Ruawai (Ruatoki) beat R. Brown and G. Vulgar (Rotorua) 21/17, 21/13, 21/17; women, Miss K. Keepa (Ruatoki) and Mrs Wahapango (Paroa). beat Mrs Brewer and Miss Galbully (Tauranga) 21/17, 21/11; mixed, Paton and Mrs Wahapango lost to Brewer and Miss Nicholas 14/21, 10/21. Junior singles: Boys/ P. Williams (Wairaka) beat H. Cameron (Te Puke) 21/15, 21/9; girls, Miss Keepa lost to Miss D. Alehurst (Te Awamutu) 14/21, 21/23.

B grade: Singles: Men, P. Crewther (Waimana) lost to H. Cameron (Te Puke) 19/21, 20/22; women, Miss Keepa beat Miss J. McKay 19/21, 21/19, 21/14. Doubles: Women, Misses P. Clark (Hokowhitu) and K. Keepa (Ruatoki) beat Miss A. Newland and Miss J. McKay 22/20, 16/21, 21/17; mixed, O’Brien (Wairaka) and Miss Clark beat Miss McKay and Bailey 22/20, 21/16.
