WAIRAKA DEFEATS TE TEKO FOR PILE CUP In probably the best club game seen at Whakatane this season Wairaka continued their 1949 unbeaten record when they defeated Te Teko by 11 (two tries, one converted and a field goal to 3 (unconverted try) in a fast and exciting match for the Pile Cup on Saturday. The pace was on from the start, and there was no letting up but the superior fitness of the. home team decided the final result. Both sides fielded solid packs and dangerous backs, both on attack and defence. Te Teko worked better in the tight and the scrums and won the majority of lineouts in the first half. Their backs were a constant menace but the line did not get going in several promising movements because of the tendency of the inside backs to hold on. When it did finally come out Beazley the fallback, who was up, went over to score a fine- try. Wairaka were kept fighting hard to keep the Te Teko team off for most of the first spell, but their forwards worked havoc in the loose and
were quick to take advantage of any mistakes. The backs were somewhat restricted by the fast moving, up of their opposite numbers, but when they did find a gap they were hard to stop. Te Teko undoubtedly had the up_ per hand for the first half and the early part of the second spell. But it was then that Wairaka.got going. Showing greater fitness they threw the ball about in a scintillating •fashion, with both backs and forwards combining brilliantly. It was from such movements that M. Riini and K. Martin, the wings, finally scored. T. Riini added five points when h ( e converted a try and later kicked a field goal. Referee: Mr W. H. Chambers. TANEATUA PLAYS POROPORO FOR 125 MINUTES Play lasted two hours and five minutes when Taneatua met Poroporo in a senior rugby match for the Bracken Cup at Taneatua on Saturday. Playing the usual two thirty-five minute spells in the Bracken Cup competition both teams produced a game of sparkling rugby, which kept the crowd excited until the last whistle. The final score was three all, each side kicking a penalty goal. At the end of this game the captains of both teams, with the permission of the referee, Mr B. Nor_ man, decided to play two further ten minute spells to decide the runner-up for the 1949 senior competition, which ended' recently.
These teams finished second equal and a play pff was necessary. These spells were played but there was no further score and nei_ ther team appeared able to gain the advantage. Then it was decided to play two. extra five minute spells but the result was the same. A further, two five minute spells were played but when time was called there was still no change. At this the game was called off after play had lasted two hours five minutes with the position of runner-up still undecided. UNITED AND PAROA PLAY TO THREE-ALL DRAW Although not producing the scintillating rugby that was played in the Wai'raka-Te Teko game Paroa and United nevertheless played good football when they fought out a three-all draw in the Bracken Cup senior competition at Whakatane on Saturday. Each team scored an unconverted try. Both packs were fairly evenly matched and toiled hard in the tight and kept play moving in the loose movements. United were slightly superior in the backs although the Pairoa defence was found hard to penetrate. Referee: Mr H. Mahy.
