HEAVY GOING AT SATURDAY’S HUNT AT TANEATUA

Gloriously fine (?) weather, with almost incessant rain, made Saturday’s meet of the Rangitaiki Ward Opotiki Hunt Club possibly one of the most amusing for the riders this season. Though the going was sticky in places, soft ground made for happy landings if not for easy take- N offs. Maybe on account of the bitof extra care the * day suggested, spills were few. After morning tea at Mr and Mrs J. Moody’s residence, attended by a good muster of Rangitaiki riders and an Opotiki contingent headed by the Master, Mr L. Looney, hounds got under way in charge of the Huntsman, Mr T. Black, on Grey Boy and the Whips, Mr D. Dodds on Auntie Laura and Mrs T. Black on Little Mexican, followed by the Master on Kikatea, and the. Ward Master, Mr G. Fogerty on Picadilly. A greasy approach with a muddy drop before the jump had some of the horses in trouble at the first ricker, and a badly ploughed runin at the third gave the tail enders some anxious moments before the hunt moved down towards the river fiats. There was little offering in the way of hares, though the hounds found hot scents twice, but the ride held plenty of bright incident. Rainsoaked riders arrived back for afternoon tea all smiles and full of bright chatter about the . troubles they had missed. Some of the highlights: Jimmy Thompson swapping pleasantries with Ben Battle who looked pained on the other side of a hedge; Bert Sharp wanting to know who called it sport, anyway, while he struggled with a flat tyre on his horse .float; Leo Simpson" getting his accelerator jammed and taking an involuntary hedge on Nippy. Amongst the followers: Bert Sharp on Blowout, B. Moody on Chesterfield, T. Black on Abie, R. Black on Valsie, H. McCallion on Roger, Mrs Todman on Robin Hood, Miss A. Hyland on Rockaway, J.
