Successful Street Appeal

Over £B3 was collected in the annual street ppeal of the Whakatane Branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children’s Society last Friday. This is a record sum and the Society has expressed its thanks to all those people who contributed towards it.

Air Letter Forms

An improved air letter form will be available from, all Post Offices as soon as stocks of the existing form are exhausted, probably in about four or five weeks! time. The paper in the new form is of good quality and is reasonably opaque. The make-up is identical with that of the British form.

Old People’s Night An old people’s night when the older residents of the town were the guests of the eevning was the feature of this week’s meeting of the Rotary Club. Several of the more older residents were asked to give a talk on their experiences in the district in the earlier times of Whakatane and this proved interesting with some hitherto little known facts being brought to light.

Empire Games Seats Applications already being received from the public for seats at sesH sions of the Empire Games in Auckland next February are several weeks too early. The intentions of the organising committee are that applications by mail should be received after September 15, on which date preferential bookings will close. Mail-order applications will be received until November 15, after which bookings will become available in the ordinary way.

“Dry” Empire Games Beer will not be sold at any pkce at which events of the 1950 British Empire Games are to be held. The organising committee of the Games has considered a suggestion that application be made for booth’s at various grounds, including Karapiro, where the rowing events will be held. However, as the games are being run by an amateur bod 1 ' foxamateur sport it was decided that liquor booths at any of the games would be improper.

Team Will Have Supporters Beside the large number of private cars going through to see Whakatane meet Rotorua at Rotorua for the Hurinui Apanui Shield tomorrow there are also about four bus loads travelling, so that the Whakatane team will not lack supporter's. It is expected that there will be an almost mass migration of football supporters tomorrow for the thermal town. It is believed that part of the game will be broadcast through station IYZ.

Only Basketball Tomorrow The only sporting attraction at Whakatane tomorrow will be the weekly competitions of the Whakatane Basketball Association on the Domain courts. Because of the game at Rotorua there is to be no rugby. Those interested in basketball have the opportunity. of seeing the club teams in action from about 2 p.m. and there is no cast of admission. The A and B representative teams will be practising on the hard court at 1 p.m. The Final Act . Final act in the cleaning up of the Domain Road cemetei-y by volunteers organised by the Whakatane Beautifying Society had its touch of humour when the So-f ciety’s president, Mr E. R. Dillicar, was prevailed upon to turn the last sod before a guard of honour of the Spade and Shovel Brigade. Having thanked everyone who had helped with the work, the president proceeded with a display of energy to attack the'; last plump'' of only fo find it/ loose already!
