W AIR AKA SCRAPES HOME FROM TANEATUA iPlaying faster and more open football and using their better combination to advantage Wairaka continued their unbeaten record for the season when they defeated Taneatua by five points (converted try) to three (unconverted try) at Whakatane Field on Saturday. The game was played at a fast pace with both teams throwing the ball about at every opportunity. Both sides were unlucky not to

score on several occasions and only a solid defence kept the scores from mounting. -Welch was the outstanding back although G. Stewart, the Wairaka 'full back was not disgraced. He gave fin exhibition that was up to representative standard. Playing his first game for ■ Taneatua, Hughes, an Opotiki representative, was impressive. Among the Wairaka players Mokai in the forwards and T. Riini in the backs worked hard all day. Wairaka (amber and black): G. Stewart, K. Martin, T. Riini, M. Riini, Carter, R. Crapp, Hudson, P. Kingi, T. Crapp, K. Merito, Simpson, H. Bluett, B. Merito, S. Mokai, Gardiner. Taneatua (black and white): Welch, McGougan, Hurran, Sisam, Thatcher, Nuku, Hill, Ferguson, Anderson, Tait, Cain, Tuhoro, Ball, Hughes, Downes. Referee: Mr B. Norman. POROPORO TOO GOOD FOR UNITED Unable to withstand the solid attacks of Poroporo, United went down by 17 points (5 tries), one converted) to nil in a rather ragged match at Whakatane Field on Saturday. The game did not produce good football and although Poroporo never looked like losing the result was rather flattering to them. Watched by a large crowd in ideal weather, both teams battled hard, but lack of combination among the United players proved fatal. Poroporo attacked continually, even when on their own goal line and these tactics were successful.

Poroporo (blue and white): T. Hotene, Rangikotua, M. Hotene, J. Biddle, J. Kingi, Tutua, T. Kingi, W. Kopae, Ngoungou, W. Paul, Tunui, Rogers, P. Merito, Brown. B. Martin.

United (white): Malaquin, Olsen, De Lacey, Goodall, Rutherford, Hunt, Goodwin, Rolfe, Dines, McMillan, Ruffles, Parsons, Mundy, Meikle, McCormick. Referee: Mr Mitchell.

PAROA JUNIORS DEFEAT UNITED In one of the surprise games of the year Paroa juniors defeated United, this year’s winners of the junior competition, by 13 points to nil in the first round of the Wilson Cup at Whakatane on Saturday. Played at a fast pace, the game produced good football but the result was never in doubt. United appeared unable to get going while the Paroa side never put a foot wrong. Referee: Mr H. Mahy.
