Scientific Bulletin On Greymouth Coal Now In Preparation
Results of a seven-year survey of Greymouth coalfields are to be summarised in a bulletin that, because of its special features, is likely to create considerable interest in New Zealand and abroad.
The Geological Survey of the Department of Scientific and Indus-' trial Research have in the course of preparation a bulletin giving a comprehensive account of the geology and the ■ coal resources of the Greymouth coalfield. The bulletin will also present, in a manner useful to industrial consumers, classifications of the wide range of coals mined at Greymouth, and estimates of the various coal reserves there.
Greymouth supplies nearly half of our requirements of bituminous coal, almost all of our gas-making coal, and is the only significant source in New Zealand of coal for the manufacture of metallurgical coke. The peculiar geological setting of the many coal deposits favoured an investigation into the origin of the different types, and a mass of detailed information has been collected. The results of hundreds of chemical analyses of Greymouth coal, records of all known drill holes, and the locations, productions, and histories of a hundred coal mines will be presented in the bulletin.
