Now Main Highway The Ohope Road from the Maraetotara Gorge has now been declared a main highway. The control of the county over the road ended on June 30. . Order Refused Y In the 'Magistrate’s Court on/, Tuesday Mr E. L. Wr.l.cii S.M., refused an order for possession of a dwelling which Watscn Peart Reid sought from E. M. Grant. The Magistrate awarded costs, £1 lis 6d to the defendant. Bay of Plenty Roll There have been 1064 new enrdlments in the Bay of Plenty electorate since the closing of the lists for the gaming and licensing poll. . Intending voters on the compulsory national service issue should note that the rolls close on Monday. . * Australian Surf Team '4' Hopes that the Australian Surf Life-saving team, which is to tour New Zealand early next year, will visit Whakatane are held by officials of the Whakatane Surf Club. Application has been made for the team to stay a day at Ohope Beach to give surfing displays. Goodwill Programme from Rotorua^ A goodwill programme from the l Maoris of New Zealand to the | people of the Cook Islands is to be broadcast by the Bay of Plenty station IYZ through the New Zealand v shortwave station on July 24. The programme will be presented by a Maori party in the IYZ studios and will consist of traditional Polynesian songs and hakas.
Stray Horses The number of stray horses wandering '‘about the county roads at night has caused the council some concern. They are a danger to motor .traffic and could be the cause of some loss of life Cr A. F. McGougan pointed out. He said horses were common on roads in the Opouriao Valley after dark. The council decided to take steps to prosecute offenders. Trucks Collide
When a truck driven by Mr G. Howat collided with a Whakatane County truck on the intersection of Douglas Street and Goulstone Road, Whakatane, at about 5 p.m. on Monday no one was hurt although dj both vehicles were extensively dam- 1 aged. The county truck was com- \ ing out of Douglas Street and Mr " Hofwat’s vehicle was proceeding along Goulstone Road when the accident occurred. Car Parking Space
Following consideration of a subcommittee’s report concerning car parking and bus terminals at Whakatane, the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce" has decided to approach the • Harbour Board with a suggestion to have a proper parking space on the reclamation area at the western end of the Strand. A deputation is also to wait on the Borough Council to discuss the proposal.
Power Wastage Alleged Concern at the amount of power ' being wasted by some people was expressed by C W. Hunter at the monthly meeting of the Whakatane County Council. He said that it was possible to take a trip .through u Whakatane any night of the \veeW* and’ see houses with nearly all the lights going full blaze. “There is one house on Hillcrest in particular, which we can see from Edgecumbe,” he said. “It has a light blazing out in front every night.”
Fire Alarm in Blackout In view of the fact that some con- y cern had been expressed about a k possible difficulty in giving fire [ alarms during power cut-off periods, the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce got a sub-committee td investigate the position. • It was found that anyone wanting to give,, the alarm during a blackout should use the alarm boxes in the ordinary way or ring the telephone exchange, which in turn notifies firemen. The fire tender has handoperated and mechanical sirens. In the case of a dangerous fire, the Superintendent of the Fire Brigade has authority to have the power switched on.
