POLICE MAKING DOMINION-WIDE CHECK ON ARMS
Assurance that steps have already been taken with a view to tracing persons at Whakatane in possession of unregistered firearms, and that general inquiries are being organised throughout the Dominion has been given to the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce 'by the Minister in Charge of Police, Mr Fraser. Mr Fraser’s letter was prompted by representations made to him by the Chamber following receipt of the report of a sub-committee it had appointed to go into the question of firearms and ammunition illegally held and if possible to suggest means of tightening up the regulations concerning the procuring of arms and ammunition.
One of the committee’s suggesL tions, passed on to the Minister, was that it might be possible to grant a general amnesty to those who surrendered illegally-held arms within a certain period, but Mr Fraser, says that would require careful consideration. He adds, however, that all reasonable steps will be taken to meet the position outlined in the Chamber’s letter to him.
