The scene: a “wash-it-yourself” laundry during the shooting of scenes for “Apartment For Peggy.” Jeanne Crain, star of the film, was using one of the 50 washing machines set up on the huge sound stage. Just before rehearsals were completed, William Holden, who portrays her husband in the picture, arrived with a bundle of clothes, including a pair of blue jeans he uses for gardening at his San Fernando valley home. With the idea of playing a joke on Jeanne, he said, “I thought this would be a good time to have these things washed.”

However, Jeanne surprised him with the remark “Okay, throw them in here. I’m a hard-working vrife, but a cheerful one.”
