MEAT PRICES CHARGEABLE FOR MONTH OF JULY

There has been much street corner and tea party discussion of late concerning the price of meat at Whakatane. Prices are undoubtedly high, but that applies to the cost of living throughout New Zealand today, and perhaps our local butchers are the victims of some undeserved criticism.

So that housewives can judge for themselves, some extracts from the latest retail price order fixing maximum prices of first grade meat throughout the North Island for the month of July are published be- 7 low:

Veal: Fillet lUd, loin 9id, stewing eid, soup meat 4id, steak l/O-ld, rump steak l/3id, cutlets l/Ogd, stuff ed 11-id.

| Beef: Pump steak 1/6, fillet 1/8, j Porterhouse 1/6 (bone in) 1/10 | (bone out), tenderboy 1/2, thick iank'or top rump and topside 1/1, skirt 11-id, chuck 10-id, blade 1/-, sirloin 1/2 and 1/5 (rolled and boneless), prime ribs lid, 1/2 (rolled and boneless), chuck ribs Bd, wing ribs 1/lid (bone in), l/s|d (bone out), topside 1/Oi-d, gravy and shin beef Bd, corned silverside 1/1 Id, rolled brisket, corned or otherwise 9id, bricket on the bone sd, flat rib 6d, legs and shins 4d, 4£d and sd.

Pork: Stuffed l/6|d, rolled l/sid, leg and loin l/3id, chops l/sid (loin) and l/2id (foreloin), foreloin 1/1-id, corned pork 1/- (hand), 1/2 (belly). Lamb: Forequarter l/oid, hindquarter 1/3, loin and chops l/sid, loin (rib end) 1/3M. Mutton: Side 9d, legs 1/lid (whole), l/2id (shank end up to 61b) thick end 1/lid, middle fillet 1/2-gd. Forequarters 8d whole, 8-id shank end and 9£d Spanish neck. Shoulders, lOd whole, IOAd shank end and lid blade end. Neck and breast 7fd, neck 9d (best end )and 7id (scrag end). Loin middle 1/1 and rib end lid. Chops: Loin 1/3, rib and trimmed shoulder 1/- leg or chump l/2-|d, Spanish neck 10id, stewing lOd, flap 6d, whole flaps 3d, French cutlets l/sd.

Prices' for hogget meat are the prices for first grade mutton increased in every case by Id per lb.
