CONSCRIPTION

Sir, —The question: Conscription! And where is it going to lead us? Once we have conscription of manpower, for a standing army in peace time, it would be comparatively easy for a despotic Government to take one step further (and we still have too many war time restrictions) with a Supplies and Services Act covered by the dominating influence of a Military Police Force! And this is what I think the world bank and the U.N.O. are aiming for—a world dictatorship control of the common man, first by dollar diplomacy and then by military power.

Physical training till the young man leaves school or college, and a further short period in camp once a year should be quite sufficient for mobilising in times of urgency.

If we are to have a referendum, we must be very c'areful as to the definition of its clauses, if any. If there are no clauses, you must look for the tag. I would heartily endorse General Barrowclough’s (Herald 23/6/49) but reserve my right to be suspicious of political and economic planning for centralised control, enemy No. 1 of British freedom.

Yours etc., W. BRADSHAW,
