Local Breeder Buys Top-Priced Cow At Maxwelton Stud Sale

The dispersal of the Maxweiton Stud owned by Mr A. C. Bailey of Wharepoa, near Thames, proved most successful, and on a basis of the average overall realisations, must rank as the best sale of the breed yet held in New Zealand. An attendance of buyers representative of every district in New Zealand from Kaitaia to Southland, competed freely for all lots, and there were no dull moments at any stage. The cattle were all of robust conformation, in good sale order, and well backed on the score of both production and show winnings. The average realisation for the 65 lots was 86f guineas (Alton sale in 1946 was 84 guineas), while individual, averages were: 24 cows 90gns; 11 I.C. heifers 84£gns; 16 yearling heifers 48gns; 3 herd sires 193 l-3gns; 11 yearling bulls llOgns. Top price was 250 guineas realised for Greenrigg Majority, an eight year old Merit Survey son of Netherton Mahmoud (Imp), which bred so successfully in the Ardgowan Stud, and his purchaser was the Camden Park Estate, of New South Wales.

Amongst the females the highest price was for one of Greenrigg Majority’s rising six year old daughters in Maxweiton Generosity, with a production record this season well exceeding 7231bs fat a New Zealand record for the breed. A new breeder, Mr G. Lodge, Whakatane, secured her at 235 guineas: while another similarly bred cow in Maxweiton Betsy made 200 guineas and goes to the well known Puketutu Stud, Auckland. The herd sire, Maxweiton Gaynor, which is also strongly bred to Ardgowan blood, and earned fame as the sire of last year’s Supreme Royal Show Champion over all breeds, Maxweiton Laura, sold for 160 guineas to the Wairarapa breeders, Brown Bros.. Kaitoke.

A rising four year old son of Maxweiton Gay Laura was purchased by Mr Lodge at 170 guineas. Twenty-four lots of the 65 sold, made three figure prices. Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd., were the auctioneers.
