350 CHILDREN ATTEND PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ TOURNEY
The annual inter-school basketball and seven-a-side rugby tournament for district primary schools was held on Wednesday at Whakatane. From the 230 boys and 120 girls who were competing teams will be selected to take part in trial matches for the selection of district representatives. Teams from Edgecumbe, Awakeri, Waimana, Tawera, Taneatua, Ruatoki, Paroa, Poroporo, Convent and Whakatane schools provided a high standard of play in all grades of both sports. Results:—• Rugby ; ; Under Bst 71bs for the McGougan Cup: Whakatane A defeated Paroa B, Taneatua B, Tawera; Taneatua B defeated Paroa B; Tawera defeated Taneatua B; Ruatoki defeated Whakatane B, Whakatane D, Taneatua; Taneatua A drew with Whakatane B; Paroa A defeated Whakatane C, Poroporo and Waimana; Waimana defeated Poroporo, drew with Whakatane C; Poroporo defeated Whakatane C; Edgecumbe defeated Whakatane E, Whakatane F and Awakeri; Whakatane E defeated Awakeri, drew with Whakatane F. Semi-finals: Whakatane A 6 defeated Paroa 3, Ruatoki 3 defeated Edgecumbe 0. Finals: Ruatoki 6 v Whakatane 6. Ruatoki declared the winning team when after extra time was played their bustling tactics caused Whakatane to force down. Under 6 stone: Whakatane A defeated Whakatane D, Taneatua B, Tawera; Ruatoki defeated Paroa, Whakatane C, Whakatane. E; Taneatua A defeated Whakatane B, Waimana, Whakatane H; Convent defeated Whakatane E, Whakatane F, Whakatane G; Whakatane A 3 defeated Taneatua A 0; Convent 6 defeated Ruatoki 0. Final: Whakatane A 6 defeated Convent 0. Winner of Red Section, Paroa.
