Horses Sell For £1 Each

Three young three-quarter draught horses, a type that usually brings from £2O to £3O each, were sold for £1 apiece at an auction in Greymouth. They were mine horses which had refused to enter the State mine at Ngakawau and had to be “turned out.” Only one prospective purchaser attended the sale. He held the auctioneer to the advertised declaration that it would take place, and without reserve, so his single bid of £1 each had to be accepted.

The Mines Department after paying advertising, transport, and grazing expenses, and meeting the auctioneer’s charge, will be “in the red” over the deal. Horses of any description fetch £1 10s at the glue factories for boiling-down purposes, so the new owner cannot lose.
