WINTER SHOW GATE TAKINGS DOUBLE PREVIOUS RECORDS: BUMPER DAYS AT WEEK-END

The procession on Saturday must have helped a lot to build the record attendance for the final day. Long before the parade was due to move off crowds lined the route of march, gaily sprinkled with children in fancy dress and in some cases with decorated bicycles.

Headed by the Pipe Band, the parade itself was worth seing. Most attractive features so far as the spectators were concerned were the burlesque fire brigade and the Pony Club’s cavalcade. Concerning ihe latter, the two dozen riders, mostly children, handled their ponies in a manner reflecting no small credit on their instructors, three of whom rode with the column.

The crowd followed right on the heels of the procession and besieged the gatekeepers at the show, thereafter flowing in to enter gaily into the general carnival spirit. Mr A. R. Chapman, marshal of the procession, again presented his Young New Zealanders’ concert programme to a large and appreciative audience in the eevning. Whakatane’s Winter Show is now definitely re-established, and on a grander scale than ever before, due to the efforts of a progressive executive and in particular to the work of the secretary,, Mr R. Cobbe, whose energetic preparations assured success before the gates ever opened. Record entries, which shattered all those for any previous show at Whakatane were received for the poultry section. Fowls and pigeons came forward, in very large numbers and there- were also large quantities of duck and the smaller birds, canary and budgerigars. Judging went on all day Friday and the final championship results were not known until late Friday night. The quality of the birds, in some cases, was rhuch better than those entered in other years. Young Farmers

Four clubs entered courts in the Eastern Bay of Plenty Young Farmers’ Clubs competitions. They were very attractively set out, illustrating the work which went on the New Zealand dairy farms. There were samples of the produce, butter, cheese and meat and in each case it was noticeable how attention was paid to the scientific side of farming as it exists today. In the court competition Awakeri were first with a total of 258 points with Wainui second with 246 points. Then came Otakiri with 237 points and finally Thornton with 236 points.
