Friday’s Downpour Floods Part Of Winter Show

. Heavy rain, which pelted down most of Thursday night and through Friday morning caused some slight flooding at the Whakatane Winter Show on Friday. At one stage water lay six inches deep on the floor of the motor pavilion and lay in deep pools about the grounds. Side shows leaked slightly but escaped much of the moisture. There was no serious damage. The heavy rain early Friday morning overflowed the gutterings on the main show building and swept over the light temporary roof of the motor pavilion. The water leaked through steadily. Behind the pavilion by the wharves more water draining from higher ground began to bank up on the asphalt. Here it is higher than in the motor pavilion. The water gradually seeped through and under the walls and rose steadily inside about late model cars, trucks and tractors. Drains were dug and the water flowed out leaving the floor damp and slightly muddy. Although show officials were inconvenienced to some extent the grounds were dried out by the afternoon and the show was in no way interrupted.
