Car Conversion Charge Charged with converting a car at Te Teko, Gilbert: Edwards, farmer of Te' Teko, was remanded in the Whakatane Police Court last week to appear on Wednesday. He was alowed bail, £l5O on his own recognisance and one surety of £iso.
Current Petrol Coupons Petrol coupons Nos. 1,2 and 3 will be available at their face value for July, it was stated by the Minister of Supply, Mr Nordmeyer, last week. In addition, any unused June coupons, Nos. 34, 35 and 36 will also be available during July.
Calling Pacific i. In response to many requests from listeners in the Pacific, where reception has been reported as excellent, the Bay of Plenty station IYZ, is now calling the Pacific in a special broadcast each Friday night, giving advance details of pro-, grammes.
Bicycles Recovered Two bicycles were reported missing at Whakatane on Friday night. One was taken from outside the Whakatane Hotel but was recovered on Saturday morning with the seat missing and both wheels badly buckled. The other machine was taken from an alley way in the Strand but was returned undamaged sometime Saturday.
Scouts’ Annual Meeting On Wednesday night, July 6, the Whakatane Scout Committee holds its annual meeting, and the conveners are particularly keen to see a good attendance of parents and others interested in the movement. Much has been achieved in the year under review, but stronger support is necessary for future steady progress.
More People In Town More people and traffic, attracted possibly by the show came into Whakatane on Friday and Saturday. Farmers and settlers from the outlying districts came to town, most of them making for the show, which was packed on both days with interested crowds. The side shows and the merry-go-rounds and the other trick shows were particuarly popular with the children. Whitebait Running
Although a bit later than last year whitebait are now beginning to run in the Whakatane and Rangitaiki Rivers. The shoals so far sighted have not been large while the whitebait themselves are still small. But the few fish that have been caught have provided good eating. Yesterday one Whakatane resident in two pulls caught half a cup of fair sized fish, which he described as being “sweet eating.”
Some Slight Flooding Heavy rain Thursday night and Friday morning caused some rivers ; and streams about Whakatane to rise slightly. Some of the smaller creeks rose high in their banks as the water rushed to drain away. In Whakatane the volume of water shooting over the Wairere Falls increased considerably and coloured a dirty brown. Although it rained heavily at times no serious flooding was reported.
