WHAKATANE-OPOTIKI CONTESTS

Yesterday Opotiki and Whakatane District High Schools and basketball teams met in five matches, of which Whakatane won three, losing the First XV and lightweight Rugby contests. RUGBY

Opotiki First XV beat Whakatane First XV 9—B at Whakatane. The forwards were evenly matched, but Opotiki got a better share of the ball through quick heeling. All the Opotiki forwards went well as a pack, while Pryor and Cave were the best tight forwards for Whakatane, with Kirk and Breward prominent in the loose. The Opotiki bac&s worked well as a chain with J. Moore, G. Moore, G. Rua and H. Parkinson playing good football. For Whakatane Brown, Wano and Harawira were good, but the line lacked combination. A notable feature was the inability of the local backs to find the line.

Scorers for Opotiki: G. Rua and J. Black one try each, and a penalty goal by R. Boynton.

Scorers for Whakatane: Two tries by Brown, one converted by Wano. Teams:—

Whakatane: Heta, Mita, White, Brown, Wano, Harawira, Flint, Watarawi, Kirk, Pryor, Prince, Breward, Cave, Lyons, Bridges. Opotiki : Parkinson, Walker, Black, Rua, G. Moore, J. Moore. T. Walker, Mareroa, Abbot, Boynton, I. Mareroa, Collier, Mcllwraith. Gault, Amoamo. Whakatane Second XV beat Opotiki 6 —3, at Opotiki. ? In a keen and closely contested game, Whakatane showed plenty of dash and determination, all the forwards working well, and Gray, Black and Mason showing out in the backs.

Opotiki Lightweights beat Whakatane 3—o, at Opotiki. Both teams played hard football in a game noteworthy for its eagerness rather than for the skill displayed. Opotiki won with a try well-deserved through good following up ’ and taking advantage of every mistake made by Whakatane. BASKETBALL

Whakatane A beat Opotiki A 38—23, at Whakatane.

Play was more even than indicated by the score, especially in the first half, where Opotiki was, unlucky in its goaling. There was very good play by the Opotiki ..centres Teams:—

Opotiki: M. Brown, M. Amoamo, S. Brown, N. Rewharewha (capt), W. Taia, M. Andrews, K. Maxwell. G. Arapeta, J. Kelly. Whakatane: I. Grant (capt), D. Harawira, M. Raureti, B. Grant, B. Mihaka, N. Kelly, B. Taylor, M. O’Rourke, J.. Barker. Whakatane B beat Opotiki B 16—12 at Opotiki. This was a very good game, particularly in the second half. Whakatane team: J. Morice (capt), T. Peri, M. Ratahi, H. Lawson, J. Slipper, L. Hohapata, J. Brown. S. Briffault, S. Heikell.
