Tomorrow’s Hunt

Otakiri Sports Area' The attendance was only fair at a meeting of Otakiri residents called to consider an offer by Sir R. Barton to make available an area of ground for outdoor sports. However, it was decided to accept the offer and a committee was set up to draft an agreement of lease for submission to a further public meeting. '

Fault in Transformer Part of the area in the Whakatane Borough about Haig Street and Domain and McGarvey Roads was in darkness at about 5.45 p.m. on Wednesday through a slight fault developing in one of the transformers. The transformer affected was one supplying power to houses only* and caused a blackout for about half an hour.

Beer Caught in Fowlhouse Recently a Murupara farmer, on going out of the house, observed a deer near the fowl-run. As he approached the animal it took fright and rushed into the fowlhouse. The farmer secured a cow cover and threw it over the deer’s head, so it could not see to charge, and it was eventually killed. Deer and wild pigs are reported to be developing into quite a menace in that area. Blackouts Not Liked Strong exception to the excessive shut down of power in the Whakatane and Rangitaiki districts compared with other areas was expressed at a meeting of the Rangitaiki Branch of Federated Farmers, Bay of Plenty Province at Edgecumbe this week. After a full discussion the meeting decided to write to the Bay of Plenty Power Board pointing out their dissatisfaction with the power blackouts.

Domain Pie Cart

It is expected that a pie cart will be in operation on Rugby days at the Whakatane Domain in about a fortnight, it was reported to this week’s meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council. Some delay had been experienced by the proprietors in. preparing the cart but it is understood that preparations are now well forward. This year there were two applicants seeking to operate ’ a pie cart.

New Cycle Stands Wanted Not entirely satisfied with the cycle stands at present in use at Whakatane the Whakatane Borough Council has decided to write sto the Palmerston North City Council for details of the stands or racks now in use in that city.' The main objections to those at Whakatane is the amount of room they take up on the streets and the fact that can be damaged more easily by vanV dais. Show To Be Broadcast Special arrangements are being made by the Bay of Plenty broadcasting station IYZ to broadcast the official opening of the Winter Show from Whakatane on June 22, Ordinary land telephone lines are to be used to carry the programme from Whakatane to the control room in the studios at Rotorua. From there it will go out to the transmitter at Paengaroa in the usual way. The relay from Whakatane will be the first broadcast to be made by TYZ outside of Rotorua.

New Sub-station f A start has been made with the necessary structure and line alterations in Salonika Street for the building of a new 200 K.V.A. outdoor substation. The present Douglas Street substation is now overloaded. It is intended to transfer the present Salonika Street load from King Street substation, this will enable the present King Street substation to supply the new Gov-, ernment housing block. It will also transfer some loading from the main substation to the temporary substation at Patterson’s farm.
