ABATTOIR FOR WHAKATANE IS NOW APPROVED
It may not be long before Whakatane has its own municipal abattoir to provide meat for the town, it was revealed at Monday night’s meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council, when a letter was received from the Building Controller, Wellington, approving of the erection of an abattoir “in principle.” Discussing the question, the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, said it would mean another loan. Definite plans and estimates were wanted and a rate would have to be struck. “Will it mean dearer meat?” Cr H.‘ G. Warren inquired.Cr R. T. Morpeth: Definitely—but better meat. After further discussion the Council decided to instruct its consulting engineer to prepare specifications and estimates for approval. The Controller pointed out in his letter that the approval was for a structure costing from £12,000 to £15,000. He states: “I have much pleasure in advising that the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Building Control has approved, in principle, of the erection of the proposed structure (abattoir) at a tentative estimate of between £l2/15,000. I would emphasise that this is an approval in principle only, and it will now be necessary for you to lodge plans and specifications, together With a firm estimate with the District Building Controller, Hamilton, in order that final . approval in detail can be given.”
