GOOD PLAY REVEALED IN FIRST GAMES The 1949 basketball season opened in ideal' weather at the Whakatane High School courts on Saturday. Five games were played off and for so early in the year the play revealed was surprisingly high. Big wins were gained by the top teams Paroa-A and Olympics. Results: — Matatua 16 v Stewarts 5, Paroa / A 44 v Redwings 4, Olympics 40. v Poroporo 7, Paroa Minors'l2 v Taneatua 5, Ruatoki 18 v The Mcßaes 6.
