NEW GROUND OPENING MONDAY Plans for the official opening of the new Rugby ground at the Whakatane Domain on Monday when Whakatane plays Rangitaiki for the Dunderdale Cup were finalised by the Whakatane Rugby Sub-Union this week. There will be three games on the day between the two unions. The juniors commencing at 12 noon, the B team at 1.10 p.m. and the big game for the shield at 2.30 p.m. The official opening will be at 215 p.m. when Mrs N. Semmens, wife of the president of the Whakatane Union, will kick the first ball. Speeches are being cut short as the day will be one mainly for football.

The new ground is a great step forward for the Whakatane Union and will be a definite asset as it now provides a field which should provide a continual income. It is also a centre where future big matches with outside visiting teams can be i layed against the Bay of Plenty. With adequate seating, dressing shed facilities and other conveniences and a press and broadcasting box the ground can be made into one of the best of its kind in-the country. GAMES AT WHAKATANE THIS WEEK-END Whakatane will have a feast of Rugby during the week-end. Whether it will be good Rugby remains to be seen but if play is anything like that exhibited last Saturday most people are going to be disappointed. However, time will tell. Tomorrow the competition games will continue with two senior games at Whakatane and one junior match at Taneatua. Poroporo, the team with a bye this week is going to Te Fuke to play a friendly game with Pukehina. The Rangitaiki Union will also continue its competitions tomorrow.

On Monday the first representative game of the season will be played when Rangitaiki and Whakatane meet in their annual fixture for the Dunderdale Cup. GAMES PLANNED AT MURUPARA A good variety of Rugby is planned for Murupara during this weekend with a seven-a-side tournament on the Rangitahi ground tomorrow commencing at 11 a.m. Monday on the same ground there will r be a senior Possibles v Probables trial at 2 p.m. to select teams to play Rangitahi Sub-Union on June 18. The curtain raiser to the trial match will be a junior game between Kaiiigaroa-Te Whaiti Combined and Murupara-Galatea Combined. The following is the draw for tomorrow’s seven-a-side tournament:

First Round: (1) Murupara B, Ruatahuna; (2) Kaingaroa B, Waiohau: (3) Murupara A, Kaingaroa C; (4) Galatea B, Minginui B. ,

Second Round: Minginui A v winner of No. 1; Te Whaiti v win-

ner of No. 2; Kaingaroa A v winner of No. 3; Galatea v winner of No.

The ordinary competition games continue next week after the brief interruption of this week-end. The following is the draw for the remainder of the first round: — June 11: Waiohau v Murupara: Ruatahuna v Kaingaroa; Galatea v Kaingaroa; Te Whaiti a bye. June 25: Kaingaroa v Murupara; Galatea v Ruatahuna; Te Whaiti v Murupara; Waiohau a bye. July 9: Te Whaiti v Waiohau; Minginui v Galatea; Ruatahuna v Kaingaroa; Murupara a bye. STARTING TIMES ALTERED There has been an alteration in starting times of the Rugby matches to be played at Whakatane on Monday. Games will be played nonstop from 12 noon. The times are:— Juniors, commence 12 noon; B teams at 1.10 p.m. and A teams at 2.30 p.m. All teams, both Whakatane and Rangitaiki are to change in the A. and P. shed. The managers for the Whakatane teams have been selected and are Messrs S. Carter (A team), K. Hollis (B team) and R. Thom (Junior team). TEAM CORRECTIONS The following corrections have been made to the Whakatane representative Rugby teams to play Rangitaiki on Monday, which were oublished on Wednesday:— I A Team: M. Bluett replaces W. McCready, who has not been selected. j B Team: H. Bluett replaces M. Bluett.
