Pitchblend Deposit Near Waikaremoana?
Pitchblend, a mineral which constitutes one of the most important sources of uranium and its compounds is possibly to be found in substantial quantities near Waikaremoana. According to Mr C. M. White, of Waimana, a big deposit of the mineral is mentioned in a book called “Old Wairoa”, now out of print, but of which Mr J. H. Talbot, of Paerata Ridge, has a copy.
Written by a prospector, who later bdcame proprietor of an hostel at Waikaremoana, the book deals with the Te Kooti manhunt of the ’Bo’s an with prospecting about that time. It mentions substantial deposits of a mineral the old hands called “black-jack”, but which is almost certainly pitchblend, between Waikaremoana and a little lake up a side creek off the main watercourse to the left. Other prospectors mentioned the same thing, but in those days did not consider the “blackj;: ck” of any value. Nowadays, if it turns out to be pitchblend, it would lepresent a fortune.
