East Coast Not Sinking

There is no foundation to rumours that have been circulating in the district lately that the coast of the Bay of Plenty is gradually sinking, according to the engineer of the Whakatane County Council, Mr C. H. Brebner. Ohope Beach, which is supposed to be subsiding rapidly, is just passing through a natural cycle where sand is being washed away by ocean currents and not being built up quickly enough by silt from flood, he said. As to the land sinking, scientists considered that the coast line on the east of the North Island was rising at the expense of the west, which was sinking, Mr Brebner added:
