Archery Club At Whakatane Holds An Opening Shoot
A splendid response to the working bee, called last Monday night in the Winter Show Hall, resulted in a full muster of members and intending members. Armed with hay for targets and sacking for screens, they presented a very businesslike brigade. In the absence of the president, Mr H. D. London, vice-president, Mr J. Dickson, welcomed the gathering, wished the members good shooting and thanked Mr R. Hunter for the work he had already put into the screens. Mr Hunter thanked members for the part they had played in completing the work, j thus, making it possible to commence a practice shoot.
Vice-president, Mr R. Stokes, then shot the, first arrow scoring a gold. Following this Mr Hunter declared the club opened and members were shown the rudiments of archery and tried their skill with the bow.
Club bows had been procured but the arrows were not to hand. How-
ever it was hoped to have these in time for the next shoot on Monday night. Several members had their own equipment which is more satisfactory as most people draw different weight bows and use various lengths of arrows.
Prospective members are cordially invited to the shoots. At present the public are not invited but as members become more competant arrangements will be made to show this ancient sport l to the public of Whakatane.
