Household Hints

FRESHEN THE HOUSE To freshen the house when next you vacuum yoffr carpets. Remove the back end of the electrolux (making sure the power is switched off) and after cleaning the filter pad sprinkle with a little pleasant smelling disinfectant. Good for the sick room.

BURNT CAKE The top of your lovely fruit cake has burnt. Scrape or grate off the burnt pieces, brush the cake with beaten white of egg, dust with castor sugar and place back in the oven for five minutes. All traces of burning will disappear. CURDLED- CUSTARD The custard you have stirred so carefully has been overheated, and as a result it curdles or separates. Quickly remove from the heat, place the saucepan in cold water, whisk vigorously with a rotary beater, and, hey presto, it’s smooth again.

POTATOES BOILED DRY You’ve forgotten the potatoes and the water has boiled away, leaving them burnt to the bottom of the saucepan. Lift out the potatoes, cut off the burned part, place in fresh hot water and continue cooking until soft. This will take out most, if not all, of the scorched flavour. TOUGH POULTRY The poultry you have ordered has arrived and you’ve a strong suspicion that it might be tough. Prepare the bird as for baking, wrap in greased paper and steam for 1 hour before baking.
