JACKSON SHIELD GAME ON SATURDAY One of the big Rugby games for the Whakatane Sub-Union, the Maori v Pakeha match for the Jackson Shield, is to be played this Saturday at, 2.30 p.m. at the Whakatane Domain. The teams have been selected and to say that there have been some surprises is only putting it mildly. However, performances on Saturday will show the wisdom (if any) of the selectors in their final choice.

The Jackson Shield is a doubly important game so far as all Rugby players are concerned. The proceeds from the match go to the injured players’ fund, a most important part of any Rugby Union’s asset. Last year almost £4O was paid out by the Whakatane Union. On Saturday everybody will be asked to pay, players and officials included. Given a fine day there should be a big erowd to what promises to be a tip top game. TEAM MANAGERS The managers for the Pakeha and Maori teams for Saturday have been selected. They are Messrs N. Semmens and K. Harawira. This was decided at a meeting of the executive of the Whakatane Rugby Sub-Union on Monday night. Because of the few teams in the junior competitions another round has been added so that there are now three rounds for this season.
