MAORI BROTHERS KILLED IN ONEPU ACCIDENT MONDAY

After they slid from a horse and received severe injuries to the head two brothers, Sydney 24, married with four children of Kutarere, and Richard Hape, a schoolboy aged 13, also of Kutarere, were both killed at Onepu on Monday afternoon. The two brothers were riding the horse and had turned to take it up on a bank running alpngside the road. The bank gave way and the horse slid backwards onto the road in front of a truck which was approaching with spoil for the road. The truck was driven by Mr K. Harawira, Whakatane, and was moving slowly. As the horse came down the bank the two riders slid olf and struck their’ heads sharply, death being almost instantaneous. The horse was killed also.
