FARM SCHOOLS ARE TO BE HELD IN THE BAY OF PLENTY
Farm schools are to be held next week in the Eastern Bay of Plenty at Rangitaiki, Taneatua and Waimana by the Bay of Plenty Federated Farmers and the Department of Agriculture. Much interest has been aroused among farmers in the district and it is expected the schools will be of considerable benefit to the farming community. Included in the number of lecturers to be present, are a team of specialists from Ruakura to give the latest work on calf and pig nutrition. It has been pointed out that these schools take a considerable amount of organising but that as long as there is interest the schools will be continued. Catering is to be done by the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers.
This year the sheep farmer is to be catered for, lectures being given on sheep management. The veterinarian will also cover the commoner sheep ailments as well as dairy cattle and pig diseases. The sheep farming talks are being specially designed to cater for the small sheep farmer who is running up to 250 or 300 ewes in conjunction with a dairy herd.
The straight out sheep farmer will also benefit from the talks. The lecturer, Mr D. Austin, of the Department of Agriculture, has had a life-time experience with sheep and has a sound practical knowledge of his subject. The schools begin at Tauranga this week and will also be held at Katikati and Te Puke before coming to the Eastern portion of the Bay next week.
