TANEATUA AND POROPORO DRAW V Before one of the biggest crowds seen at a club match at Taneatua for years, Taneatua and Poroporo seniors drew, 3 all in a hard, rugged game. Teams:—
Taneatua (black and white): Welsh, Downes, McGougan, Hill, McCready, Thatcher, Tait, Ferguson, Hayward, ‘Anderson, Cain, Semmens, Ball, Shaw. Poroporo (blue): Huta, Biddle, Tutua, J. Kingi, T. Hotene,; M. Hotene, Rangikotua, Thompson, S. Paul, B. Martin, P. Clay, P. Merito, Kopae, Paul, R. Kingi. • Poroporo’s backs were far superior, though the forwards were evenly matched. Biddle showed out well on the day and the Poroporo forwards worked well as a pack, holding the somewhat ragged Taneatua rushes well. For Taneatua Welsh and W. McCready were outstanding. Scorers: Poroporo (3 points), M. Hotene, a penalty goal. Taneatua (3), W. McCready, a try, unconverted. Referee, Mr H. Mahy. PAROA HAS 17—8 WIN OVER UNITED Superior team work and a heavier pack of forwards gave Paroa a nine point, win. when they defeated United by 17 (3 tries, 2 converted, 1 penalty goal) to 8 (converted try, penaity goal) in a senior Rugby match at the Whakatane Domain on Saturday. Territorially the honours went to Paroa but United played, good football, although their teamwork was not that of teams - that have played together previously. The teams:— , i *
Paroa (black): Aukaha, K. Wana, Martin, C. Hakopa, R. Ngatai, M. Harawira, W. Jaram, B. Ruru, Honana, P. Ratahi, S. Takotohiwi, B. Tutura, T. Hona, B. Mokai, T. Wahotanga.
United (white): D. Boon, Oborne, W. Rutherford, G, Goodall, G. Koea, T. De Lacey, D. Stewart,. C. Olsen, L. Stewart, McMillan, A. Mundy, Parsons, E. Petty, Ruffles, Meikle.
For the first spell Paroa attacked continuously but were kept out by a determined United pack. The pace soon told however, and apart from a few times when they were pushed back by slashing individual rushes Paroa piled on most of their points.
It was a different story in the last spell. United improved considerably and to offset this 'Paroa loose forwards adopted spoiling tactics and started coming round scrums and through lineouts. At times it seemed they were offside but they were not halted. United scored all their points in this half. Scorers:—
Paroa: Tries, Ruru, Wahotanga, Ratahi; conversions, Harawira 2 and 1 penalty goal. * , ,
United: Goodall a converted try; De Lacey penalty goal. Referee, Mr A. Mitchell. EDGECUMBE BEATS TE TEKO With a field goal by L. Newdick the only score of the match, Edgecumbe beat Te Teko 3—o at Te Teko on Saturday. The ground was a bit heavy following rain. Early in the game Edgecumbe missed a good chance when Sullivan made a break, but- failed for lack of support. Te Teko also slipped with a hopeful looking penalty kick. Following a scrum close to the Te Teko line, Newdick brought off the “Bennie Osier” that decided the match. - Outstanding player on the day a was J. Sunkel, turning out again for Edgecumbe after a few years’ spell and making a great comeback. Mr A. Magee was the referee.
