Winners Of The Poetry

The' unmistakable feminine touch is apparent in the two -leading poems submitted in the competition. Mrs Hewitt, Waimana, with her

“Bird Song” and Mrs Carr, Otakiri, “In Retrospect,” took the honours in this section. The poems:— In Retrospect

When I was young and life had just begun, The world and all it held seemed made for fun; Laughter and joy went hand in hand with spring, With ne’er a thought for time; youth had its fling.

Now I am growing old, and had my day, I do not think that youth should be less gay, Yet, as I gaze into the fire, my thought Is just regret, that youth’s day is so short. Bird Song I rested neath a mighty tree, Beside a river grand, When wand’ring far from town and sea, In distant forest land.

I listened to the sweetest sound That I had ever heard, And sought in wonder till I found A little woodland bird.

I gazed upon that songbird there, It looked so small and neat, Yet high up in the balmy air Its tones came clear and sweet.

It sang up in that leafy dome I felt the tear-drops start. It sang a song, of love and home Which echoed in my heart.

Though years have passed I hear it still For mem’ry lingers long, And often-times I feel the thrill Of that sweet woodland song.
