ALL COMPETITIONS WILL START TOMORROW Tomorrow the Rugby season will be opened in .the Whakatane and Rangitaiki Sub-Unions for the new season. For the Whakatane Union games will be played at Whakatane and Taneatua while Rangitaiki matches are to be played at Edgecumbe, Matata and Te Teko. Whakatane Rugby followers will have the senior match between Poroporo and Wairaka, and Taneatua, Paroa v Taneatua, both games starting at 2.45. A junior match between United and Paroa will also be played at Whakatane. This season promises to be a successful one for Rugby and it is hoped by officials that there will be a rise in the general standard of play. Tomorrow games in the Rangitaiki Union will be:— Senior: Matata v Te Teko at Matata 2.30 p.m., referee, Mr J. Hyland; Edgecumbe v Thornton at Edgecumbe 2 p.m., Mr A. Hegh. Juniors: Te Teko v Otakiri at Te Teko 1 p.m., Mr. E. Gardiner; Matata v Edgecumbe at* Matata 1 p.m., Mr A. Magee. HURINUI-APANUI SHIELD ELIMINATION ROUND Whakatane is to play Apanui at Whakatane in the elimination round of the knockout competition for the Hurinui-Apanui Shield on July 2, it was decided at the annual meeting of the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union at Matata. The full draw was | made out resulting in Rangitaiki to play Tauranga at Tauranga, Opotiki v Te Puke at Opotiki, Rotorua v Galatea at Rotorua. This match is to be a direct challenge. Following the Hurinui-Apanui Shield competition play will commence for the Shalfoon Shield elimination round the following week, July 9. The draw for this competition has yet to be decided. To bring competitions into line it was decided that all trophies, with the exception of the Parata Cup, will be arranged on the elimination system. Other trophies also came under discussion including the Pile Cup and the Mclntosh Shield, challenges for which, have to be in by August 27. An offer of a new trophy, the F. J. Burt Memorial Shield, was made by Mr B. Magee, Rangitaiki-. Mr Magee said the shield was being offered by Miss Burt for senior inter-sub-union competition. There was some discussion over the condition of play and it was decided to accept the trophy, with the proviso that the word senior be deleted from the shield. The executive are\ to decide the -conditions under which it will be competed for. The meeting decided to take over the Moore Shield and although the executive will decide the conditions of play it was recommended that it be on the same basis as the Hurinui Shield elimination with the venues reversed.

MANAGER FOR MAORI ALL BLACKS NOMINATED Mr A. E. Spratt, Te Puke, has been nominated by the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union for the position of manager of the Maori All Black team to tour Australia this year. Last year Mr W. Henderson, Whakatane, was the manager of the Maori All Black team that toured Fiji. 1 WAIMANA PLAYING FOR OPOTIKI Permission for this season only has been granted the Waimana Club to play Rugby for the Opotiki SubUnion instead of for Whakatane it was decided at the annual meeting of the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union.
